Opening of a new flight to Astana
The first airport in Kostanay was built in 1937. It was located 3 km northeast of the current one near the railway station. With the construction of a new airfield in the late 70s, the old one began to be used as a sports airfield.
From 1980 to 2000, the new airfield was used as a joint-use airfield, where a transport aviation regiment was based. In 2018-19, the artificial runway (AILS) was reconstructed, which was extended by 300 m to 2814 m. The AILS was also widened to 60 m. This made it possible to receive fundamentally new aircraft and serve more flights. After the reconstruction, the airport was able to receive large-sized cargo.
